Two Web Comics

1) Peter Conrad's Lou's Garage

Peter Conrad's strip, Stymied, morphed into Lou's Garage. I still very much enjoy the strip, but the focus on garage shop humor isn't something that I would normally be interested in if I hadn't already become a Conrad fan through Stymied.

We Don't Talk Anymore

2) Nicholas Gurewitch's Perry Bible Fellowship

PBF is not strictly a web comic, since it has a print counterpart, but I am not fortunate enough to have access to the print version. My favorite example of Gurewitch's dazzling control of the medium of comics is Lord Gloom. It is a perfect strip.

I like Perry Bible Fellowship quite a bit too. Thanks for introducing me to Savage Chickens too.

Now, about Lou's Garage. I know I can't keep the automotive humor at the center of the strip. I've been trying to work the cat into the strip more often, and to joke about things that people can relate to, like coffee. I'm looking at new directions, like getting an underlying story going. When Roger was stuck out on the boat, that was a kind of a long storyline that was situation-based. With Lou, I have the opportunity to do something character-based. I have some ideas about how to use is (as-yet only barely introduced) arch-rival, Buck. We'll see how it goes. I really appreciate your comments, and thanks for reading the strip!

Man, Perry Bible Fellowship is really wacky. That's good stuff. Do you have any idea why it has that name? What makes it weirder to me is that I come from a rural county in Pennsylvania called Perry County and suspect there may well be a church there called Perry Bible Fellowship.

Peter Conrad,
Thanks for commenting. I hope I didn't sound harsh (because, even if automotive humor isn't first on my list, I readily admit that you do it very well). The only reason that I put up a post linking to your strip is because I think that it is of exceptional quality. There are a lot of web comics out in cyberspace, the vast majority of which I find very disappointing. Your work, however, is consistently good and I keep coming back for more (well, actually the RSS feed delivers it to me). Any plans for print in the future? My first exposure to your work was in Backwards City Review #1.

Steve,
I don't know much about Gurewitch or the origin of the name of the strip. The closest I can find to an answer is this:

BLAULB!:Why is the strip called "Perry Bible Fellowship?"

Nicholas: I was raised Christian, and I like fencing.

There's a good review at the WebComics Examiner, and there's info at Wikipedia

Trawlerman:
Thanks for the kind words about my work! I do have a printed collection of Stymied strips (from before it changed into Lou's Garage) which I hope to put on my online store before too long. So far, I've been making them available only to people who sponsor me on my Waves to Wine ride, but after the ride this weekend I'll make them available to the general public.

Which work of mine did you see in Backwards City Review? I'm curious. Do you live in Buffalo? I think my uncle teaches at the university there.

Anyhow, thanks for reading my strip. I rarely get actual feedback, so it's hard to know how I'm doing.

Peter Conrad,

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the collection. I also followed the link to your store and really want a copy of ANK#9, but I'll wait to buy it until you put the Stymied collection up, so that they can be shipped together.

In BCR, I was introduced to you through "What's in a name?" It was last spring, maybe late April, early May, and I've been checking out your new strips on your site ever since. I apologize for the silence.

I live just outside of Buffalo, in Depew (about 20 minutes from downtown Buffalo). I'm actually a student at the university right now, pursuing my MLS (Master of Library Science).

"I rarely get actual feedback..."

It's funny. I've been reading comics my whole life, and I've never written a letter to a creator, even when I've felt strongly about something, even when I know that comments are welcomed and solicited. I think that this self-imposed distance of mine is beginning to change, but slowly.

For what it's worth, I'm glad that you found my brief comments and commented back.

Well, cool. Nice to meet you, Trawlerman! I'll put the collection up online late next week. Meanwhile, I have to go think of a joke for tomorrow's strip :)
